David Read GBCT has an extensive background in film and television. He began his career at the National Coal Board Film Unit, one of the last great industrial film units. The unit had a reputation for excellence and has been associated with such talents as Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz. It was here that he was given his first opportunity of film lighting. When the unit closed he became a freelance camera assistant and worked on numerous productions including the feature films BRAZIL, DANCE WITH A STRANGER, CHAMPIONS and ANOTHER COUNTRY.
All the time David had been working towards becoming a Director of Photography in his own right and first started working as a Lighting Cameraman/DOP on such television shows as WORLD IN ACTION , THE CLOTHES SHOW and EQUINOX. It was to be the film, REVENGE OF BILLY THE KID that was David’s feature film lighting debut, working with his long-time acquaintance Jim Groom who directed and co-wrote ‘Billy’. Jim and David later collaborated again on ROOM 36, a black and white thriller in the Hitchcock tradition, in which David's original and imaginative cinematography creates both atmosphere and menace. Room 36 was nominated for the Golden Hitchcock award at the Dinard British Film Festival and was nominated in several categories at the Syracuse International Horror, Science Fiction & Fantasy Film Festival including a personal nomination for David in the Best Cinematography category.
David has photographed feature films and worked on many television productions from dramas such as THE BILL, and FAMILY AFFAIRS to documentaries including WATCHDOG and THE MONEY PROGRAMME. He has photographed commercials, including Sony, Wintrillions and Nutty Bingo and many music videos for artists such as, Flesh for Lulu, the Fall and Plan X.
The fast paced environment of news on such productions as PANORAMA and NEWSNIGHT has equipped him with on the spot decision making skills and the ability to work quickly and accurately when under pressure. He recently taught a series of lighting masterclasses for ITN NEWS camera staff.
His work in TV dramas has developed his lighting skills and the discipline of keeping to a tight schedule and budget. His feature film experience has allowed him to develop his creativity and ingenuity in achieving the required lighting effect and atmosphere in the most practical manner possible. Critics have described his cinematography as; "Magnificently evocative" and "Creative".
He is flexible, versatile, proactive and a good communicator. He is calm and focused under pressure. His deep understanding of visual narrative and the medium of film together with his professionalism, experience and unique imagination enables him to bring the director's vision vividly and simply to life
Recent feature productions include ISLAND directed by Rehan Malik, DESPERATE MEASURES directed by Steve Looker, TAMLA ROSE directed by Joe Scott and ARCHIE directed by Sue Shearing. Documentary productions include THE ENEMY WITHIN about the 1984/5 miners' strike for Bad Bonobo Productions and a short film about the 200th birthday of Jane Austen for the British Council.
Other notable productions photographed by David include the forthcoming documentary, 'Taylor Made - My Life in Lights' about the life and career of one of Britain's greatest cinematographers, Gil Taylor BSC, who died recently at the age of 99. Gil's career in films dates back to 1930 and he has worked with directors such as Hitchock, Polanski and George Lucas. His creative genius can be seen in some of the memorable films of all time including Star Wars, The Omen, Repulsion, Macbeth, Ice Cold in Alex, Dr Strangelove, Frenzy and Star Wars.
The photo below was taken on the location of the feature film DESPERATE MEASURES on which David was Director of Photography. Shot on location in the Yorkshire Dales and Manchester, DESPERATE MEASURES is a psychological thriller directed by Steve Looker, written and produced by Chris Green and starring Stephen Lord, Richard Harnett and Max Beesley Snr.
